I was born in North Brazil, in a region where ceramic making and decorating is a traditional art form. As a child, I played with clay and collected many small clay artifacts. Admiring and studying Portuguese tiles, the blue and white ones, from my Portuguese ancestors, is one of my favorite childhood memories. Drawing and pencil coloring portraits was already a part of my life when I was ten years old. I began drawing the portraits and then moved on to oils and watercolors. At the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst, where I earned a BA degree in Arts Management and Modern Languages, I focused on water coloring plants used in pharmacology, and figure drawing with chalk. There, I also learned the basics of the Hebrew language and became interested in studying traditional art forms and ancient cultures. I learned to paint
with low-firing glazes on functional ceramic pieces with pastel and
ceramic artist Judy Haas of Aspen, Colorado and I studied hand building
with clay at The Santa Fe Clay Studios, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While I
spent time with instructors developing my artistic skills, I consider
myself mostly self-taught. Besides
developing Celina By Design Studios, I am also an interpreter and
translator of Portuguese and Spanish, and a facilitator for corporate
development training.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I feel moved by Nature's brilliant
colors and intricate morphology. I
want to translate this beauty into functional artifacts that bring
celebration to daily life. Traditional
art forms fascinate me because of the artistic lineage of humanity. They speak to me of the human spirit recognizing Beauty and
wanting to celebrate it. I
am constantly stirred by colors and shapes, and I daydream of how I can
gracefully paint them. I have been a business consultant who dreamed of
being an artist in my old age. Recently,
I realized that I can be an artist right now.
